I haven't been since February of '06. And I didn't see Mr. Lincoln that trip because I was SO PISSED OFF about what they did to the attraction.

Hiya from NorCal,

Some time opened up from work, and
we're suddenly planning a trip to the Magic Kingdom during the week after Thanksgiving.

I know... peak holiday time to travel.. and at this point last minute to plan....

but the huzzleband & I really REALLY want to surprize our little 3.5yo grrrrl.
After all, our little grrrl will only be 3.5 years old once...
and she TOTALLY believes the magic.
AND- we simply *must* go and experience the christmas hoopla (esp Small World) together.
God, she loves it, and we just love seeing her love it too.

The subject of Disneyland with small children is a thread unto itself.

but lets begin with booking the accomodations.
I could really use a hand getting started here....

Last time stayed at the ParkVue,
it was OK I guess...
Not magical at all. Just a motel, close to the entrance.

We visited the park(s) for 2 days.
We left SoCal feeling like we could have spent a total of 3-4 days at Disneyland only.

Anyway,
This time, it would be nice to do it 'right'.

Some say that by staying at one of the resort hotels it would be more of an *immersed experience* -
Is that true or just... whatever? More expensive I expect, but is it "more" fun, esp for a family?

Thru obvious online sources for booking disney (Costco, AAA, Disneystore.com) it appears the Disneyland Hotel is booked up...
(choice #1 as its the less pricy of the three resort hotels, am I correct?)

Might there be other room brokers/ agents to contact and cut to the chase?
Do I just call the hotel direct?
Anyone got the hot tip?

:::tap::
:::tap:::
:::tap::::

oh wise disney fanatic tribe,
Is there anyone out there willing to guide me????

Maximum thanks,
B.Nonymous

PS: Also.... what attractions/shows etc should NOT to be missed on our Disneyland trip (with said 3.5 year old grrrrl)????

There a million fan sites out there for the Billys.

But what do you kids think?
Anyone out there have any backstage or frontstage stories about the glory that is this group?
Did you see them with the original line-up of Kirk Wall, the brothers Marshall and Dennis Fetchett??

Um. I looooooove these guys. First saw them in '97, I think ?? That was the first time.
I was immediately in love with Kirk Wall. Because I'm super creepy like that... I ran into him in the streets of New Orleans Sqare that first day and had my picture (long lost now, I think) taken with him. He asked if I was from 'around here' (there). I thought he was hitting on me. Ah, young love.

But really. What a show. I come from melodrama and everything's big and audiences are encouraged to participate and have a swell time along with all the cool kids onstage. That was Billy Hill for me. Wild. Fun. Well-written, even.

And the music !!
I have about four or so copies of their record (CD for you young things). It never ceased to amaze me that such a proficient group of musicians did something so silly. Why it surprised me is beyond me in retrospect.

But, man.
What a great gig. Lucky fellers, those guys.
I know the line-up is rather rotating these days... I'm not sure I'll ever make it to see my favorites.
Elvis Billy was played (the last time I saw them, in early '06) by the skinny cat that used to be in the Mayor's Show just out front of the G. Horseshoe.

He's good. But he's no Kirk Wall.

And just in case none of you has ever realised it -
Every fan letter is creepy. There's no way around it.
Trust me.

Last day officialy that it will be open is this weekend but I've been told that it will stay open until August 7th. I'm hoppin' mad! I loved the gallery, a great place to just hang out and get some quiet time and I loved the art and art history that was exhibited. Please go to the Disneyland web site and let them know you are not happy about a piece of Disney history biting the dust to make room for another cash cow.

11:19 PDT Los Angeles (AP) --

Veteran Disney animator Art Stevens, who co-directed "The Fox and the Hound" and "The Rescuers," has died. He was 92.

Stevens died May 22 at his home in Studio City after suffering a heart attack, said Disney spokesman Howard Green.

Born in Montana in 1915, Stevens began working for Disney after he learned that Walt Disney planned an animated feature based on one of his favorite stories, "Alice in Wonderland."

Among Stevens' credits as an animator are "Peter Pan,""101 Dalmatians,""Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day,""Robin Hood,""Mary Poppins" and the underwater sequence in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."

He co-directed the 1977 film "The Rescuers" with Wolfgang Reitherman and John Lounsbery. Stevens and Reitherman also produced "The Fox and the Hound," which Stevens co-directed with Ted Berman and Richard Rich.

It became Disney's highest-grossing film at the time when it was released in 1981.

Among other career achievements, Stevens provided story concepts and did animation for three TV documentaries on space exploration that were produced and directed by Disney animation legend Ward Kimball.

The two men later worked on the Academy Award-winning Disney featurettes "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" and "It's Tough to Be a Bird."

Stevens also helped design and animate the title sequences for the Disney features "Freaky Friday,""No Deposit, No Return,""The Strongest Man in the World" and "The North Avenue Irregulars."

He retired from Disney in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Penny; his sons, Craig and Kent; and four grandchildren.

Al Lutz (miceage.com) has written on some interesting rumors about the park... I used to work during Fantasmic! and they utilized A LOT of the island... I wonder how this will affect things. Anyways here's the scoop:

"But what has Rasulo fired up in the short term for Disneyland is the same thing that has nearly everyone in Burbank bursting with excitement, and that's the Billion dollar business the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise has just pulled in this summer.

In a theme park proposal that was crafted in the corporate offices of Burbank rather than the WDI design studios of Glendale, the Pirates franchise is planned to expand its presence at Disneyland for next summer's release of the third Pirates movie. While another tweak to the lavish 15 minute long E Ticket attraction was always part of the equation, much to the very noisy annoyance of some people at WDI, the corporate bosses are now eyeing an additional piece of property just across the Rivers of America from the ride itself in New Orleans Square.

The Burbank bigwigs have Tom Sawyer Island in their sights, and if the budget gets approved later this fall that 50 year old piece of Disneyland history will go the way of the Skyway and the House of the Future. What Burbank has proposed is an ambitious plan to restructure and retheme the island into a pirate playground, where Captain Barbossa and Davy Jones would displace the less than blockbuster Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher.

The current proposal calls for over 28 million to be spent this winter rebuilding and rebranding the Tom Sawyer themed attraction. Gone would be the treehouses, trails and caves referenced in the literary works of Mark Twain and originally designed for the simpler audiences of the 1950's. In their place would be snazzier pirate themed activities designed for the kids of the 21st century who have grown up with extreme sports and Super Mario Brothers instead of barrel hoops and Tom Sawyer. The current lush wooded landscaping would also presumably be substantially altered, as tropical islands don't quite match the southern American landscape.

This proposal has been moving very quickly (and up to now, quietly) through the approval process and at its core it's driven by the insane profits and audience interest the second Pirates movie generated this summer. Once Burbank made it clear they wanted this remade attraction for Disneyland to coincide with the third movie release next May, the operations folks jumped on the bandwagon and happily added in requests to upgrade the infrastructure and physical facilities on the Island.

It's no secret that the Island has needed a makeover and more modern facilities installed for quite some time, and this project is just the ticket to get those things paid for. New bathrooms and regraded trails to accommodate wheelchairs and electric carts were added to the plan, as well as a snack bar and a small shop to milk a few bucks out of the expected hordes of parents and their children. In almost a complete reversal of the normal way a new attraction is proposed, the marketers and merchandisers drafted the concept and the plans and the Imagineers are now left to struggle to come up with the actual designs and themes.

The proposal is so sweeping and moving so quickly that it may not all make it by next May. Part of the plan calls for the old Fort Wilderness facility to be razed, and the space used as an interactive pirate museum using exhibits and interactive play spaces such as those used in the Sorcerer's Workshop in DCA's Animation pavilion, or the nifty Fortress Explorations attraction at Tokyo DisneySea. That proposal for Fort Wilderness may be pushed into a Phase Two plan, which would be just fine with Burbank if they move forward on an as yet unscripted fourth installment of the Pirates movie series. And the word is that Johnny Depp is amenable to yet another sequel.

Of course, it'a a given that die-hard Disneyland fans will likely recoil in horror when they first hear about this idea. But what should be kept in mind is that this project would make a beloved old corner of Disneyland exciting and relevant again for a new generation of fans.

A few years ago Disneyland was forced to go in and remodel some of the play areas on the Island to bring them up to code and pass muster from Disney's own safety department. During that physical rehab and freshening the Disneyland Entertainment department also added live Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn characters to the Island, young men dressed up in 1800's clothing who wandered the island telling stories and jokes as written by Mark Twain. The response from some of the older parents was of bemused interest, but the 7 to 12 year old crowd whom the entertainment was aimed at couldn't figure out who the guys were dressed in the funny clothes and why they kept talking about whitewashing a fence. Does Home Depot even sell whitewash? Is Mark Twain available on a PodCast?

While the recent appearance of Tom and Huck on the Island was a noble attempt on Disneyland's part to try and bring Tom Sawyer to life for 21st century audiences, it was obvious these were characters no one under the age of thirty knew much about. Ask a ten year old today who Huck Finn is and you'll get a blank stare, but ask him about Jack Sparrow and you'll get a high five. And that's what has most folks in Imagineering (WDI) a little more excited about the project, as they would love to make sure Disneyland stays as fresh and exciting to audiences in 2006 as it was a half century ago. Rest assured there is a bit of controversy over this plan up and down the halls of WDI, but as this is being driven directly from Burbank apparently they don't have much say in the matter.

Now before you storm the MiceChat boards, just try to keep in mind that this still hasn't received the formal green light and funding from Burbank. But it's a project that is moving so quickly and with so much political muscle that it was important to bring to light now. It's also something that needs to be ready to open in just seven short months and there's plenty of work to do, so the formal decision will need to be made quickly, if it hasn't already been decided by the time you read this. We'll of course keep you informed if this gets the green light and we'll keep you in the loop as the endless details of the project get ironed out through the fall. (And yes I'm also wondering what'll happen to the Indian village out back, not to mention the itchy bear and every other river-side tableau.)

Add to all that the inclusion of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly animatronics to Pirates itself, plus the massive Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage that promises to be the talk of Southern California next summer, and the rather corny Rockin' Space Mountain and Rockin' California Screamin' overlays for this winter and spring, and suddenly Disneyland's dance card for the next year is very full.

The pirates movie premiere is slated for Southern California for a third time next May, although it may take on a different format than the previous two events. Some managers in Walt Disney World had lobbied to have the next premiere staged at their property, but they were shot down by Burbank executives who didn't want to put up with the hot and rainy Florida climate or the cost of flying in a dozen or two celebrities when they could have 100 celebs happily show up for a fraction of the cost in warm and dry Anaheim.

But this time, instead of staging the premiere inside Disneyland, the event may end up on the shoreline near Long Beach. If Rasulo has his way, they will have pulled the financials together and be able to use the movie premiere to announce that the third ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet is being built and will be home ported in Southern California. Regardless of where and when that announcement is made, it's a commitment that should be announced by next summer with a first year sailing itinerary slated for the end of this decade. You can expect summertime trips up to British Columbia and the Alaskan glaciers, and wintertime trips down the Mexican Riviera, all tied in to a few additional days at Disneyland."

One lucky family experienced a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true Oct. 4 when they were awarded with the "Keys to the Magic Kingdom" at the Walt Disney World Resort, and had the theme park all to themselves.

This unprecedented moment in Disney theme park history was part of the launch of The Year of a Million Dreams celebration, during which literally millions of dreams will come true at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The Year of a Million Dreams celebrates the dreams of Disney theme park Guests from around the world, so Disney transformed the Spangler family from Randolph, Ohio – winners of the "Keys to the Magic Kingdom" prize through an online sweepstakes – into the ultimate Magic Kingdom Park VIPs.

Raymond and Tammy Spangler, and their children, Derick (13) and Ashley (11), arrived at the theme park at dawn, where they received a surprise red-carpet welcome complete with balloons, confetti, and applause from hundreds of Walt Disney World Cast Members and Disney characters to the tune of "Be Our Guest." The family then set off on a VIP tour of the park that included rides on their favorite attractions, meet-n-greets with Disney characters and a live interview on "Good Morning America."

As the lands of the park filled in behind them with other Guests, the Spanglers dined with Disney royalty at Cinderella's Royal Table and were named the grand marshals of the Disney Dreams Come True parade. They were to conclude the day with an "unbirthday party" inspired by Alice in Wonderland, a VIP viewing of Wishes fireworks and private dessert party.

For Tammy Spangler, winning this one-of-a-kind experience truly was a dream come true.

"I couldn't have dreamed this dream," Tammy said. "It's far beyond anything I could've imagined. I'll never forget this experience. At [Walt] Disney World, dreams really come true."

Tammy's husband Raymond echoed her excitement.

"This is unbelievable," he said. "They'll never top it."

I worked at the Big D for over three years and never, ever saw as big a crowd as the one we struggled through there this last Saturday. It was solid people from the main square to the hub. Unbelievable. It ended up being a great visit in spite of the masses but it sure started like a twilight zone; we went first to Space Mountain which was closed because of some "temperary" problem (tried again three more times but it kept closing everytime it saw us approach). So we thought we'd pick something with no line, the Tiki Room, just to get our ears wet. But when we got near it we saw that ALL of Adventureland was closed! The whole land! Can they do that?! Third stop, The Haunted Mansion which, you guessed it, was shut down because, as cast member Dennis explained "someone made a real mess in there." We then traveled south to discover the Blue Bayou was closed and continued around the corner to see why; so were the Pirates. There we were in the midst of what seemed like at least five million other visitors, all walking around with nothing to do but shop and eat. Fun fun fun. Eventually we found our way onto things (God Bless Fastpass) and it was really great, as always.

Note:: even though people were camping out two hours before Fantasmic, there was rail space on the smoking dock ten minutes before the show, which supplied us a front row seat to one of the three screens (and missing a view of some of the cutouts and pinochio didn't hurt the live show any.) After Fantasmic we used the short cut between Frontierland and the Castle and ended up right in front for Tinkerbell's appearance (we had to move to the side but still had a great view of the firework show).

We're a little bummed because we'll have to ride some of our favorite rides alone, like Space Mountain, Indy, Thunder Mountain, and the Matterhorn while the other parent watches the boy. Some stuff we can do as a family, like Haunted Mansion and the Buzz Lightyear ride. We just went over Thanksgiving last year, and had lots of family members in tow to help watch the boy, this time we're on our own.
source: miceage.com

Here Comes the Bride

While Lasseter gets his bearings, there are a couple of surprise projects that were already coming to Anaheim over the short term. The Haunted Mansion is the first up to bat with some additions and changes that will be sure to send the extremely passionate group of ultra-fans into the stratosphere.

Since the final funding and approval for this project didn't clear all the hurdles until just recently, these changes won't be fully evident when the Haunted Mansion opens from its two month rehab late next week. But in the weeks and months to come new effects, props and sight gags will appear in the Haunted Mansion that will tweak a storyline that only the most diehard fans even know exists. (And that's exactly why WDI feels it's appropriate to change it up a bit, as the attraction as it currently stands offers no real plotline to 99% of Disneyland visitors aside from 'spooky things happening in a haunted house').

In the séance scene, some of the cornier special effects created in the '60s will be replaced with more modern effects. As Madame Leota continues her eternal incantations, ghostly apparitions will fade in and out as if they were struggling to cross over from the spirit world by Madame Leota's invitation. Those faces will become more important later in the ride, as they'll show up again.

The biggest changes will be coming to the attic scene, as that's where the new plotline will be most evident. As it is now, the attic scene is simply a cluttered and dusty place with a ghost inexplicably dressed like a bride with that spooky beating heart. But when the additions are all installed, the bride will become a much more sinister character who has apparently been killing off all of her previous husbands. As the doombuggies pass through the attic, riders will see portraits of several dashing young gentlemen, with each portrait piled next to "the loot" that the man brought in to the marriage.

Those portraits will look familiar as they'll be the same faces that were just beginning to appear in ghost form back in the séance circle. But a new special effect will allow the heads of these gentleman to suddenly disappear from the portrait, as if they had been decapitated in a grisly murder. And when riders arrive at the exit of the attic scene, the bride will still be there, this time in a new location and clutching a bouquet of wedding flowers that magically turns into a blood stained axe as each vehicle passes by. Fans of the Haunted Mansion will instantly realize how this alters the attraction, as it is now implied that the house belongs to this bride and she has been luring rich husband after husband who meet a headless demise shortly after they take their vows. The entire backstory of "Master Gracey" and his lovely young bride that became so popular in the last 10 years, mostly via the Internet, will be rendered obsolete.

More changes are still to come at the end of the ride, but these are likely to be far less controversial. The iconic "Hitch Hiking Ghosts" who appear in your doom buggy via those magic mirrors will make the jump to the 21st century. Instead of the extremely simple figures that barely nod their head as they appear in your car because they are literally mannequins on sticks attached to a turntable behind the two-way mirrors, more advanced and animated figures will now join you. They'll be able to move their arms and hands and really be expressive as they appear to interact with you in the vehicle. The hope is that this remake of the final scene of the ride will leave people asking "How did they do that?!" in the same way people do when they currently leave the clever Turtle Talk show at DCA. This is all part of Bob Iger's stated desire to use the latest technology to improve Disney's classic storytelling, and that's why the funding didn't get approved fast enough to install these changes before the ride reopens next week. But by the busy Easter Vacation period, these additions should all be installed and switched on.

And you can bet that these changes to Haunted Mansion will cause quite a stir from the online Disney community, which is exactly what WDI is expecting. Certainly there will be outcries from the diehards, but the Imagineers working on this project openly admit that they are aiming these show changes to the other 99% of Haunted Mansion riders who have never heard of Master Gracey or the convoluted story of his bride awaiting his return from sea. The Imagineers would simply like to create a bit of a plotline where currently none exists, and try and bring some cohesiveness to what is now a collection of spooky scenes that don't have any real connection to each other.

Much like the decision to close the Millionaire show was made after it was discovered the weekend audience was made up primarily of the same core group of 1,000 or so Annual Passholders, these Haunted Mansion changes are aimed at making the ride a better experience for the average tourist or the first time Disneyland visitor. That this plot twist to Haunted Mansion was able to fly under the radar for so long due to the late budget approval only will make these changes more of a shock to the diehards, and both WDI and TDA have braced themselves for impact.

I went on the new Jungle Cruise about a month ago. And after I got off of it the 1st time I was totally blown away! Everything looked so good, and new events that happen inside look great. I was really happy.

Then I started thinking more and more about it. I used to be a Jungle Cruise skipper a few years ago. I was a Skipper for about 5 years. And one thing I remember the most, is how upper management tried their best to have us NOT deviate from the script. They tried to issue us warnings, threats, and other such non-sense if we tried to add our little personal touch to the Cruise.

After riding the "New" Jungle Cruise I finally realized they accomplished that. With all the events, and show spacing, there is little to no time for any jokes. It's now, here's a joke you've all heard, look something new! Over and over again, and the sound for the new items are so loud that it's really hard for any of the skippers to be heard. It seems like they were finally able to stop any of the skippers from adding anything to the script.

Now don't get me wrong, after working there for a pretty good time, there were some Skippers that should've stuck with the original script, but there were also others that added to the script, and were phenomenal. But with everything the way it is now, it seems impossible to have any skipper add their own little touch to the ride. I have been told by friends of mine that still work there, that Management is really cracking down on those that add. or "change" the jokes. And that that's why a major part of the "events" last so long in the ride. To force the Skipper to talk about that, instead of making up their own jokes.

After thinking about it, I miss the Old Jungle Cruise.

Any ways that's just my $.02 from an old school skipper, if anyone else agrees or disagrees let the discussion begin now. :)

The first model Mr. Joerger made for Disneyland was of the steamboat Mark Twain. Three-dimensional renderings of Main Street, the Jungle Cruise, the Matterhorn and much of the rest of the original Disneyland followed, his niece said.

"Guys like Fred were kind of the heroes of the next generation of Imagineers," said Kevin Rafferty, a senior show writer and director at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Mr. Joerger also became a field art director, making sure that such rides as Pirates of the Caribbean and Submarine Voyage achieved the look that Disney's staff envisioned.

I am looking to sell one of my signed Mansion Concept prints. Its signed by Sam McKim. I bought it about 12 years ago at Disney Gallery. It a very, very early concept of Mansion, so much so it really is quite different from the Facade we know now. Its 20x 16 framed with double matting, frame matches the goth theme of print, its a nice piece for any Manion fan. To be honest I havent seen it reproduced since. I bought it for $400 selling it for $200

I also have a concept print of the crypts signed by Ken Anderson of Mansion as well. It also is framed with double matte, goth theme of course!. Its around the same size as above art maybe alittle larger. Its more of a chalk concept, but The creme de la creme (unfortunatly) is that he signed it somewhere within two- three weeks from when he died. Two things confirm this to me #1 We waited over a month til we call and was informed he was signing when he could. Two weeks later he was gone.#2 the signature shows it! You can read his name and date but this was not signed by a well man.

This one I bought for $400 as well, I will concider best offer but no less then $200

I am willing to hagel more on the Sam McKim but the Ken Anderson one Im sticking to $200

I have no pic at this time but will tomorrow and will post ASAP. but I do assure you these are authentic, nice, signed prints. It hurst to let them go but if they get a good home I have peace in that
A visitor is stricken after riding the Bobsleds. Her doctor says her illness is not related to attraction.

By Dave McKibben, Times Staff Writer

The Matterhorn Bobsleds ride at Disneyland was temporarily closed after a 62-year-old woman visiting from Peru was hospitalized after exiting the attraction, park officials said Tuesday.

Disneyland officials said they notified the state's Division of Occupational Safety and Health and shut down the ride about 6:15 p.m. Monday, after the woman complained of nausea and dizziness. The Matterhorn, one of the park's most recognizable and popular attractions, was reopened at 4 p.m. Tuesday after state safety officials inspected the ride and spoke with the woman's doctor.

The woman's doctor said her illness was not related to the ride, said Dean Fryer, a spokesman for the safety agency. "The statement correlated with what our inspection concluded, that there was nothing wrong with the ride."

The woman asked first-aid attendants at the park if she could lie down after exiting the ride, said Maria Sabol, a spokeswoman with the Anaheim Fire Department. When her condition did not improve an hour later, she was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was reported in serious condition.

Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez said the unidentified woman had an existing medical condition.

On June 13, a 4-year-old boy died at Walt Disney World in Florida after going on a ride that subjects the body to strong acceleration forces. The cause of death is being investigated.

SANTA ANA, Calif. - (KRT) - Thurl Ravenscroft of Fullerton, Calif., whose voice was known worldwide through his work in movies, TV and at Disneyland, died Sunday from prostate cancer. He was 91.

Tony the Tiger?

That was Ravenscroft.

Disneyland? Too many voices to mention, but Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and the Enchanted Tiki Room were all graced by Ravenscroft's pliable, unique voice.

Movies? How about "Cinderella," "Dumbo" and "Lady and the Tramp"?

"Disneyland wouldn't have been, and wouldn't be, the same without him," said former park President Jack Lindquist. "It's all part of the experience. You can't go home with a ride, but you can go home with a memory, and part of that is the audio - the sound part of it. His voice was one of the things that made it all come alive."

Thurl Arthur Ravenscroft was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Norfolk, Neb. He moved to California in 1933 to study interior design at the Otis College of Art and Design. While in school he was encouraged to go into show business and auditioned at Paramount studios to be a singer.

By the mid-1930s, he was appearing regularly on radio, first on a program titled "Goose Creek Parson." In the late 1930s, he appeared on the "The Kraft Music Hall" with Bing Crosby, singing backup in a group called the Paul Taylor Choristers. That group eventually became the Sportsmen Quartette.

After military service during World War II, he returned to Hollywood, later becoming involved in the Mellomen singing group, and began a career in radio, movies, television and commercials. The group could sing anything from rock `n' roll to bebop to barbershop, and it performed with a list of stars including Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

In 1952, Ravenscroft achieved a measure of immortality, thanks to a TV commercial.

"I'm the only man in the world that has made a career with one word: Grrrrreeeeat!" Ravenscroft roared in a 1996 interview with The Orange County Register. "When Kellogg's brought up the idea of the tiger, they sent me a caricature of Tony to see if I could create something for them. After messing around for some time I came up with the `Great!' roar, and that's how it's been since then."

Ravenscroft's involvement with Disneyland goes back to opening day in 1955, when he was the announcer for many of the ceremonies and events. His voice has been heard on numerous Disneyland attractions and rides, including Adventure Through Inner Space (1967-1986). He was the original narrator on Submarine Voyage.

In 1966, Dr. Seuss and Chuck Jones teamed up to do "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for CBS. Ravenscroft recalled the Grinch fondly, saying, "That was my chance to prove I could really sing." The success of the Grinch led to other projects with Dr. Seuss, including "Horton Hears a Who" and "The Cat in the Hat."

His singing career continued into the 1970s. As a member of the Johnny Mann Singers, he sang on 28 albums, appeared on television for three seasons and performed for President Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev at the White House.

One of Ravenscroft's biggest local claims to fame undeniably was his narration of Laguna Beach's Pageant of the Masters, a job that began in 1973 and lasted for two decades. He told the Register upon his retirement that it was his favorite gig of all time.

"I've learned more about art doing the Pageant than I ever did in art school," he said.

Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling remembered working with Ravenscroft as "a wonderful collaboration.

"He was a gentleman who was beloved, and is still beloved, at the pageant," Duling said. "He was considered the grandpa of the pageant. Everyone backstage adored him."

Ravenscroft possessed, said Duling, "one of the great basso voices, so distinctive. For me, it was like writing music for an instrument that has a few tones that are absolutely unmistakable. It was so distinctive that you had to play to its strengths. He could bring a kind of deep, resonant reverence to something that deserved proper respect. Also, in his folksy manner, he could be the grandpa that everybody loved," Duling said.

Another fan with memories is Werner Weiss, Web master of www.yesterland.com, an Internet site that highlights popular Disneyland attractions, including many that no longer exist.

"(Ravenscroft) is one of the busts in the Haunted Mansion," Weiss said. "He's uncredited, as so many cast members at the park are, but it's his face and voice. It's unusual. You actually SEE him in that attraction, a man whose voice you're heard a thousand times."

June, Ravenscroft's wife of 53 years, died in 1999 at age 80. He is survived by two children, Ron and Nancy, and four grandchildren. Services are pending.

I posted the following in the thread, titled "Great Tips":

Food and merchandise sold from carts tends to be a poor value.

Merchandise is frequently of higher price and lower quality that that available in the shops. And, the food is, likewise, substandard and overpriced compared with that served by the physical restaurants. Moreover, service is almost always lacking.

The management of Disneyland loves outdoor vending because it can sell cheap food and cheap merchandise for extraordinarily high prices while not having to maintain any significant physical facilities. Guests buy toys expecting them to fall apart within days, and Guests have lower expectations regarding the food, as well. Disneyland can additionally operate these carts without having to maintain a large staff or a particularly competent one as outdoor vending places no limits on age in hiring and employs many adolescents. Disneyland can also charge higher prices for the offerings available from the carts since they are often placed in the middle of high-traffic areas where Guests cannot help to avoid their hard sell.

Generally-speaking, outdoor vending is for suckers. And, with the addition of cotton candy and funnel cakes to the mix (to the defiance of Walt Disney's explicit wishes), the atmosphere these carts and stands create is less festive and more seedy. Everyone should boycott them.

The Potential of Further Increases in the Prices of Annual Passports This Year

I had never owned an annual Passport until a few years ago when the Paul Pressler and Cynthis Hariss administrations lowered the prices of the admission media so much so that the value proposed by them was hard to dispute.

The Matt Ouimet administration has been trying to dissuade holders of the annual Passports from renewing and raised their prices with a sizable increase a year or so ago. I did not renew mine, but much of the reason I chose so was because of the construction at Disneyland and the fact that I had grown a little weary of the place and the way it was being managed.

I had planned to possibly purchase a new annual Passport after the summertime to experience some of the Golden Anniversary festivities near the end of the year. And, apparently, the other people who failed to renew their Passports are thinking the same way.

Disneyland's market research is telling the current administration that the relatively few people who did not renew their Passports after the latest increase in prices are waiting until the construction walls are disassembled and Disneyland regains a sense of its former self. So, another round of major price increases is likely now that the Golden Anniversary celebration is nearing its formal innauguration.

Even though, I rarely use my annual Passport to visit during the summertime or other insanely busy periods, I may make a trip to Disneyland soon to buy another annual Passport before the prices increase again.

I wanted to take my niece and friends because right now for SoCAL residents it's 2 for 1, and I still havent been to the Cali Adventure park yet.

So I'm trying to figure out what will be open/closed at this point in the year.

Thank You

Madame Leota's crystal ball will supposedly be floating above the table on which it has always rested, moving around in some ghostly fashion. Reportedly there is a new computer-controlled projection system which will keep her face on...well, her face.

I have some friends who will be at the park on Monday so I'll post whether or not this is true and if the effect is working.

Looking at the ride layout, there is an alternate track for boat storage that parallels Tortuga. Maybe if they build the building out, put in the new stuff there, then switch the tracks (unused boats in Tortuga, guests routed through night scene) it could be really awesome. Our dear old ride at day, and the undead at night.

Would also bring more people to the attraction, easing up Indy and the Mansion.

What do we think they should do about the place?

It's short on attractions. One corner (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire/Superstar Limo) is a ghost land. It's poorly landscaped. It's kind of short on restaurants.

It's perversely got some great stuff (TOT, Soarin', Grizzly Rapids), and we love the ice cream parlour built into the train, but the entire carnival section seems so out of place.

Anyone else?

Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. - A float in a Disneyland parade struck four people, including a woman who was taken to a hospital, park officials said Monday.

"A Christmas Fantasy Parade" was near the end of its route, near "It's a Small World" attraction when it hit four spectators at about 8:15 p.m., park spokesman Rob Doughty said.

Anaheim fire Capt. Jamie Hirsch said the people were hit by the simulated carpet on the Aladdin float.

"Instead of going straight, (the float) kind of turned to the side and hit the four people," Hirsch said. "The float has a piece of carpet that comes off the back. The piece of carpet struck the guests."

Two adults and a child were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Doughty said.

One woman, identified by her sister as Mayra Perez, 34, was knocked unconscious and taken to a hospital.

"(The float) hit her and knocked her out cold," the sister told The Orange County Register while waiting at the emergency room. "Her face is bruised up pretty bad."

Light rain may have contributed to the accident, which is under investigation by the Anaheim Police Department.

"The inclement weather and the fact that the ground may have been wet could have contributed to what happened," police Sgt. Rick Martinez said.

The last accident at Disneyland occurred in July, when two trains on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster collided, causing minor injuries to five people
