Hiya from NorCal,

Some time opened up from work, and
we're suddenly planning a trip to the Magic Kingdom during the week after Thanksgiving.

I know... peak holiday time to travel.. and at this point last minute to plan....

but the huzzleband & I really REALLY want to surprize our little 3.5yo grrrrl.
After all, our little grrrl will only be 3.5 years old once...
and she TOTALLY believes the magic.
AND- we simply *must* go and experience the christmas hoopla (esp Small World) together.
God, she loves it, and we just love seeing her love it too.

The subject of Disneyland with small children is a thread unto itself.

but lets begin with booking the accomodations.
I could really use a hand getting started here....

Last time stayed at the ParkVue,
it was OK I guess...
Not magical at all. Just a motel, close to the entrance.

We visited the park(s) for 2 days.
We left SoCal feeling like we could have spent a total of 3-4 days at Disneyland only.

Anyway,
This time, it would be nice to do it 'right'.

Some say that by staying at one of the resort hotels it would be more of an *immersed experience* -
Is that true or just... whatever? More expensive I expect, but is it "more" fun, esp for a family?

Thru obvious online sources for booking disney (Costco, AAA, Disneystore.com) it appears the Disneyland Hotel is booked up...
(choice #1 as its the less pricy of the three resort hotels, am I correct?)

Might there be other room brokers/ agents to contact and cut to the chase?
Do I just call the hotel direct?
Anyone got the hot tip?

:::tap::
:::tap:::
:::tap::::

oh wise disney fanatic tribe,
Is there anyone out there willing to guide me????

Maximum thanks,
B.Nonymous

PS: Also.... what attractions/shows etc should NOT to be missed on our Disneyland trip (with said 3.5 year old grrrrl)????

Personally, for a 3.5 yr old I wouldnt spend the extra money on one of the resorts. You will be disappointed at how NOT IMPRESSED she is with them. You can still go over for breakfast with Lilo and Stich or the Princesses..but I'd save the $. Besides all of the biggie attractions...don't miss Turtle Talk with Crush in CA. Totally awsome...especially if she is a Nemo fan.
Have fun. My 11 year old Princess can't get enough. I love to watch her love it too...it's the BEST!

I agree where I LOVE staying at the Disneyland hotel the three year old will not really know the differnce you will love it since its so easy to get to... Paradise pier is also a good choice.
Off property I like carusel suites... a co worker has stayed at Anaheim Maingate and she swears by it. there are others but thats what I can remember off the top of my head.

Bring a stroller... even if she is 3.5 she will get tired and if you get a hotel that is close enough it will be easier just to walk. The last time I went my daughter was 4 and her cousin was 5 they took turns in the stroller or it just carried our waterbottles, jackets and stuff but so worth it when one got tired.

YOU must spend time at the Princess Faire @ DLand if they are still doing it, it really is like a two hour time spend but so worth it for the little one. Turtle Talk is the best @ CA.

Be prepared for rain its known to happen but the best thing with a rain coat you are good to go! Rain ponco for the stroller also! Also Find and USE the Kids Centers (or Babychanging center) Located at both parks they are great to warm up food. One year we brought those little toddler meals and used their microwaves to warm up food it was great! Mostly used for babys to change and feed, warm up formula but they will accomate toddlers... and quite frankly we have stored meds that needed to be ref. there also (Brother is a diabetic)

Since it will be busy take things slow go early in the morning and leave in the after noon for nap time and come back to the park really it helps. Also hit breakfast at Goofy's kitchen at the Disneyland hotel if you are a AAA member you get a discount! make a reservation now. But for Breakfast its a good buffet and the charecters come to your table while you are eating its great! I would suggest to do it the first day that way you will know how she will react to the charecters so you don't wait in line to see Mickey only to find out that 4.5 foot mouse is very scary!!

    Well thats my two cents

if you don't mind the little shuttle bus which you purchase daily passes for from the hotels, I like Embassy Suites it's maybe a mile from the park and while the 3.5yr old will love Goofy's kitchen, it's not for every morning. Embassy has full cook to order breakfasts starting well before the park opens, we stayed there with a large school group and it was the best decision EVER. We try to keep meals in the park to only one or two each day to save $. The Embassy rooms have two queen size and a fold out couch in the living room, fridge.. can't remember if they had microwaves darn it... but they might have... at any rate, with a small child who needs quiet time to get to sleep, you can close the door to the bedroom and have some mommy and daddy time before climbing into the other queen bed. (just a thought)

With family and a long stay the Disneyland hotel is great, we stay there in the summers with a view of downtown disney, fireworks, etc... The little things are nice at the hotel, and the staff is first rate.

For the fiftieth we couldn't get our normal rooms at DL hotel and stayed at the Hilton which has some nice views of Space mountain and the fireworks...but no breakfast.

New at DCA is the Monster's Inc. ride sure to be a hit with kids of all ages, I enjoyed it, essentially a high tech 'dark ride' like Mr. Toad or snow white etc.. from Fantasyland.

A day of autographs can be an experience too, I recall getting all the princess' with my daughter in just over an hour or so. Not sure how we did that... but it was something she's never forgotten.. and she still has the sweater somewhere to prove it (we didn't do a book, we had sharpies and they all signed her birthday sweater) Even the Evil Queen got in on the act. By the time their ten, they won't care about autographs and talking to the princesses anymore, so bear that in mind.

I have to disagree with that. My girlfriends I are always like to talk to the princesses!! :) Makes us feel special when they call us princess... Of course, I don't think they know that I am an Empress. But I let it slide. ;)

I think kids go through stages... and the preteen and teen years for a lot of them loses some disney magic. No two children are the same by any stretch, but I've seen it happen time and again. Our girls love Disneyland, but could care less about autographs, they do like talking to the Princesses, but it's generally in passing as the Princesses are heading in or out from the front of the castle. I think its still a little thrill, the princesses are all very nice and I've watched them spend time chatting with the more how do I say it? Sweet and polite, but not shy children.

Hi everyone, and thanks for all the information!

Tomorrow we head off to spend three days at Disneyland.
Instead of flying, we got a luxurious rental car, and will take our time getting there.

First stop: an afternoon and evening at Gilroy Gardens for the Holiday Lights and a holiday feast!
Next afternoon (monday) we'll arrive in Anaheim where we have premium reservations at the Candy Cane Inn
          (www.candycaneinn.com)

We are all so excited to get to Disneyland- especially ME!!
My little girl packed at least 8 priness gowns (and accessories) - not that she will wear them all, but she's definately in the spirit!
I'm really happy our little family will be able to have this get-away to ourselves,
Sandwiched between the two major family/holiday obligations...
Some fantasy and fun with just the three of us is much needed!

So.. just a couple of quick questions, as we head out:

          - Is the Star Wars ride too scary for a not-average, star wars lovin' 3.5 year old?
          - How about the Pirates of the Caribbean .. or Haunted Mansion?
          - Has anyone seen the Jedi Training show or whatever that is?
          - I have not yet, but should we have already made a reservation for the princess lunch/dinner... and what time is it??

I'll be sure to post a recap about our experience when we return...
In case there's anyone else like us who will travel to Disneyland with their litte ones.

MAXIMUM THANKS for all of your suggestions... and enthusiasm!

          -Bambi

I have no clue about the Jedi thing, but if you mean Star Tours...I think she'd love it.
Princess Breakfast....call and make reserviations before you leave or get on a wait list if you can.
Pirates and the Haunted Mansion...don't be wimpy!!! She will love them!!!! lol

The Jedi Training show happens over at the old Tomorrowland Terrace stage. It's intended for fairly young kids. They get them in Jedi robes, have them go through picture-friendly "Jedi training" with old school light saber toys, then the Duelling Darths arrive and it's up to the kids to duel one or the other of them (everyone splits into two groups). It runs fairly short, there's the Terrace restaurant right behind it, and while I haven't been through it I've heard the "upcharge" items (so they get to keep the various toys they get outfitted in) is pricey but not outlandish.

very picture friendly choreographed fighting... made me wish I was 8 years old again... I wondered if they'd mind if my daughter brought her own lightsaber... it's the purple one, very fashion friendly...

as a star wars geek of old, I thought it was awesome to behold, even if you don't buy the 'upcharge' items

Wayn ARE you kidding my 15 year old was really upset that they didn't pick him... :) although he did get the attention of Darth Maul
So how was the trip? with the 3.5 year old?

                    Happy New Year, Everyone!
Sorry for the late-report... I've been meaning to post about how our trip to DL went...

                    In summary:
                    It was TOTALLY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the third year in a row that we've gone with our daughter during Thxgiving week...
Guess that officially makes this our yearly holiday pilgrimage... and a family tradition!
I treasure the first couple of years we had as 'new' parents, but this year was by far the best.
So many highlights, I don't know where to begin!

We were mentally prepared to spend most of our time in Fantasyland, in the Princess Pavilion, Toon Town (which we did do, of course...) But we quickly found that our lil' grrrrl has grown up to be totally gung-ho, fearless, and up for anything.
What a difference a year makes, as well as her finally being *just* tall enough for the big-kid rides made!
YAHOOOO!!!! Me and my baby-daddy were so totally thrilling to finally be able to go on roller coasters again.. this time as a family!!!
So all in all, this year we covered so much more ground, and had so many more amazing experiences together.
There were many favorites, but the top three if I had to choose were:

                    Space mountain... OVER AND OVER!!!!
                    Star Tours.... OVER & OVER!!!
and somehow we all LOVED LOVED LOVED the Soaring over California ride in the C. Adventure park..
(if for anything, for the believable sensation of feeling like we were REALLY FLYING with our family!!!!)

***Christmas at Disneyland**** was in full effect, and I must say they really out did themselves this year.
The castle was so breathtaking, it still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. Millions of lights!!
There seemed to be even *more* snow going on, in more areas this year and the fireworks were spectacular..
Especially when viewed while standing right in front of the castle.

A must see for us is: SMALL WORLD.... at Xmastime, they completely decorate for the holidays which our daughter loves... and so do we!
(PS: at this writing, S.W. is closed for one year- to renovate the waterways/boats. But will re-open for holiday season 2008!)

Haunted Mansion was changed up as "Nighmare Before Christmas" too which was kind of cute..

I expected it would be terribly crowded being that it was Thanksgiving week - but we were happy to find it was quite comfortable getting around and that there were practically NO LINES for any of the rides we went on. The only one with crazy lines was the new, Nemo-Submarine attraction. (We actually ended up skipping that one - until next visit -because the crowds were harshing our D.L. buzz.)

The princess Lunch at Ariels Grotto was cute, and absolutely thrilled our daughter. She was so totally into it!!! Kind of expensive for what it was, but if you have a little one into the Princesses this is a great opportunity to meet each one, and get LOTS of photos. And its not just for little girls, we saw lots of little boys there too! Not all the kids were dressed up, but ours was - as Sleeping Beauty - and she was so excited that Sleeping Beauty took the time to dance with her, and show her some moves. Really, all of the princesses were so sweet and kind to the kids and families. Always willing to make each child feel special, and give them lots of hugs. So the Princess Lunch was totally worth it - if anything, at least once in a lifetime.

The storytime and dance & Maypole performances that happen in the Princess Pavilion in Fantasyland was wonderful too. You can really get some great photos there - A beautiful setting, with awesome natural lighting! And so much fun, too. A good 'rest spot' during a busy day at the park.

This year, we did the "get all the autograph's" thing - a bit reluctant at first, but did it since we saw all the other kids doing it. We bought a cute combination autograph books/photo album at one of the stands at the park, and every time we saw a character, let our grrrl run up and meet them and get an autograph (and photo). At first I thought it was silly, but now that we're home I'm glad we did it because it made the magic last longer and is a sweet keepsake. Along those lines, after seeing tons of kids (and adults) with them, I kind of regret not buying one of those Lanyards and a few collector pins to get our little girl's pin collection started... but we will NEXT TIME! (Peer pressure!)

We thought we'd be disappointed not being able to say at one of the BIG hotels on the property, but in the end it was better than fine. We stayed for 4 nights at the Candy Cane Inn, and it was great! We'll be returning there next time for sure. Clean, quiet, and great service.
It's the first hotel next door to the left of the park entrance (on the same side of the street). It's a pleasant stroll to/from the main gate, but also has a free, private shuttle that departs hourly. We sprung a few bucks more for their deluxe pkg - which has a later check out, cont. b-fast delivered to the room, etc.

We purchased 3 day park hopper tickets at the hotel, for a bit less than full price. After much reflection trip on the long ride home, we decided we WILL be going again soon, and next time for FIVE days...perhaps as early as in the spring??? Tat is of course in addition to our traditional pilgrimage before the holidays next year.
After doing the math, looks like ANNUAL PASSES in the end is the better deal for us since we plan to go more than twice in a year.
Seems like there are some perks to being annual passholders, too - discounts, priority seating, fast track to the rides, etc.

I think our only complaint was that during the week we were there the park closed PROMPTLY at 8pm on weekdays. Certain areas get roped off for the parade/fireworks long before then - making access impossible, and even some rides closed early - so next time we'll be sure to schedule our plan accordingly. We LOVED the Fantasmic show, but found out it only takes place on the weekend during the holidays, so we were lucky not to have missed it. Its a huge, amazing, over the top production... Fire, water, lights, CRAZY AMAZING!!

I know there's much much more, but for now I'll leave ya'll with this ramble. This really was our best trip ever.
Thank you to EVERYONE who had recommendations and insights that answered my pre-trip post. Your ideas really helped alot!
In turn, if If anyone has questions, or will be going with a littel one and needs tips feel free to ask :)
I'm not as disneyland-experienced as some on this Tribe - but I have every intention of running with it, and becoming a Disneland FANATIC as my daughter grows up... and beyond.

                    Ahhhh... To feel alive!

Now.... Lemme try to figure out how to post a picture in the gallery here, so you all can see how gorgeous the castle was this holiday season... Take care, and maximum THANKS!!!!

                    Happy New Year!!!!
